Although the scope of the foreknowledge of the prophets and Imams (peace be upon them) is considered a secondary issue in the discussions of prophethood and Imamate, the existence of numerous debates and questions about the extent of this knowledge has added to its importance. While an examination of Quranic verses and narrations proves that these noble figures possessed knowledge of the unseen (Ilm al-Ghayb), their manner of dealing with matters such as calamities, choosing spouses, appointing agents and commanders (some of whom later betrayed them), as well as the circumstances of their death or martyrdom, raises many questions about the extent of this knowledge.
The findings of this descriptive-analytical study, which seeks to establish a criterion for the limits of the knowledge of the unseen of the prophets and Imams (AS), indicate that the scope of their foreknowledge did not include the outcomes of their personal trials. Despite having foreknowledge of others and various matters—even in the minutest details—they were not aware of the results of their own tests.
