Applying the interpretive perspectives of Abul-Futuh Razi and Baydawi on the verse of the First Commandment

| The present article uses a descriptive-analytical and comparative method to compare the interpretive views of two groups of commentators, Abu al-Futuh al-Razi and Baydawi, on the verse of the leaders of authority (an-Nisa'/59). The difference in the interpretive views of the two commentators is due to their fundamental religious and doctrinal differences on the issue of Imamate, especially in the need to appoint and determine an Imam (by divine decree or by the election of a council), as well as the specific nature and characteristics of the Imam's infallibility and knowledge. Since this holy verse is one of the most important verses in the field of obedience and guardianship of the infallibles, peace be upon them; numerous interpretations have been presented about it. From examining their views, it is clear that Abu al-Futuh al-Razi, a Shiite commentator of the sixth century AH, has presented a specific view on the meaning of this verse through theological, rational and narrational analysis. He mentions three possibilities regarding the meaning of "leaders of authority": rulers, scholars, and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them); However, by rejecting the arguments of the first two possibilities, he considers the only worthy example to be the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.). Based on the criterion of infallibility, the criterion of superiority in rank, and the absence of obligation to the impossible, he argues for the necessity of the infallibility of the "principals of authority" and considers its examples to be the infallible Imams (a.s.). In contrast, Qadi Baydawi, a Sunni commentator, interprets the "principals of authority" as the rulers, judges, and religious scholars during the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and considers the return to God and the Messenger to refer to the Book and Sunnah after the Prophet's death. These analyses show that the interpretation of the verse of the "principals of authority" not only plays a role in understanding religious guardianship, but also has a theological, jurisprudential, and political basis. |
