The sermon given by the holy prophet during his last Hajj (The Farewell Pilgrimage) at the pond of Khumm, is one of the various religious texts denoting Imam Ali's Leadership and his appointment as direct successor-ship of the Prophet. The explicitness of the sermon on Ali's successor-ship of the Prophet and the special conditions it was delivered makes it more important than the other texts. However, Imam Ali's argumentation and reliance on it has been ignored. The narrative and historical evidences indicate that he relied on this historical event in various critical times and situations. These evidences can remove some doubts such as different understandings of the word Maula (master) and Imam Ali's presence in the event.
