Abstract
“Amir al-Mu’minin” is an Islamic, political and exclusive title. The Shiites, considering the hadith of the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him), Islamic sources, the words and writings of their first Imam, and the usage of the infallible Imams (peace be upon them), have reserved the title for Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him). As for the second Caliph, for the first time, disregarding the words of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) and for a false reason, he chose that title for himself, and his followers expanded it, and the rulers after him did not reserve it for himself, and the other caliphs and rulers following him (the second Caliph) were also called Amir al-Mu’minin. In this study, the title "Amir al-Mu'minin" is examined in hadith sources using a descriptive-analytical method, and its meaning and origin are clarified with reference to the Holy Quran, with emphasis on Nahjul-Balagha and other sources, and its applications in the words of Ali (AS) in Nahjul-Balagha and in an innovative move with regard to the relationships of companionship as well as the audience, etc. His deservingness to that title is emphasized. From this article, it is concluded that "Amir al-Mu'minin" is a divine and Islamic title and is specific to Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib, and it is not right for others to call themselves or anyone else by it. |
