Despite its centrality in interpretive traditions across Sunni and Shia schools, its historical semantic evolution has not been thoroughly investigated. This study adopts a historical-analytical approach and relies on textual and documentary methods to trace the transformation of the interpretive discourse on this verse across three major periods: the early Islamic era, the medieval period, and the contemporary age. Findings indicate that the interpretation of the verse was deeply influenced by the political and social realities of each era. Shia commentators, drawing from the narrations of the Prophet&rsquo;s household, have consistently emphasized its reference to Imam Ali&#39;s guardianship, whereas Sunni interpretations have mostly centered on the general obligation of delivering the divine message, often shaped by concerns for unity.
