fa سفارت عثمان بن سعید عَمری؛ بازخوانی انتقادی دیدگاه ادموند هیز در کتاب کارگزاران امام غایب تخصصي Special پژوهشي Research قرائت رسمی امامیه از نهاد سفارت، که برای نخستین‌بار در مقاله ورنا کلم با رویکردی تاریخی مورد انتقاد قرار گرفت، در سال‌های اخیر با صورت‌بندی و نتایجی متفاوت، اما هم‌راستا، در کتاب کارگزاران امام غایب اثر ادموند هیز پی گرفته شد. هیز با تأکید بر اینکه جز در گزارش‌های برخاسته از هبهالله کاتب، گزارش صریح و متقدمی از وکالت عثمان بن سعید پس از شهادت امام عسکری دست‌یاب نیست، در اصل سفارت وی و تقدم او بر فرزندش محمد بن عثمان تردید نمود. وی هم‌چنین با استناد به گزارش هبهالله کاتب درباره مدت فعالیت محمد بن عثمان، تردید پیش‌گفته را تقویت کرد. با این ‌حال، درنگ در این دو شاهد، کاستی‌های مهمی را در تحلیل وی آشکار می‌سازد. گزارش مربوط به مدت فعالیت محمد بن عثمان، صراحتی در آغاز سفارت مستقل او پیش از عثمان بن سعید ندارد و نقل‌های مستقل از هبهالله کاتب، عثمان بن سعید را خلیفه امام، واسطه انتقال اقوال و اوامر امام، و شخصیتی لازم‌الاتباع در نقل‌ها معرفی می‌کنند و به صراحت از جانشینی محمد بن عثمان پس از وی حکایت دارند. مهم‌تر آن‌که، در گزارش‌های مربوط به تأیید عمریِ پسر، سفارتِ پدر، به عنوان اصلی تثبیت‌شده طرح شده و سفارت پسر در پرتوی آن معنا یافته است. در نتیجه، شواهد هیز نه‌ تنها تقدم عثمان بن سعید بر محمد بن عثمان را نقض نمی‌کند، بلکه مجموع قرائنِ موجود، سفارت عثمان بن سعید در آغاز غیبت کوتاه را تأیید می‌نماید. The official Imami account of the institution of the agents (al-sufarāʾ), first subjected to historical criticism in Verena Klemm&rsquo;s article, has recently been revisited&mdash;albeit through a different but broadly convergent formulation&mdash;in Edmund Hayes&rsquo;s <em>Agents of the Hidden Imam</em>. Emphasizing that, apart from reports deriving from Hibat Allāh al-Kātib, no explicit and early evidence is available for the agency of ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd after the death of Imam al-Ḥasan al-ʿAskarī, Hayes questions both the very agency of ʿUthmān and his precedence over his son, Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān. He further reinforces this doubt by relying on Hibat Allāh al-Kātib&rsquo;s report concerning the duration of Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān&rsquo;s activity. A closer examination of these two pieces of evidence, however, reveals significant shortcomings in Hayes&rsquo;s analysis. The report concerning the duration of Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān&rsquo;s activity does not explicitly establish that his independent agency began before that of ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd. Moreover, reports independent of Hibat Allāh al-Kātib portray ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd as the Imam&rsquo;s successor, a mediator of his statements and commands, and an individual whose authority was binding; they also explicitly attest to Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān&rsquo;s succession after him. More importantly, in the reports confirming the authority of the younger al-ʿAmrī, the agency of the father is treated as an established premise, while the son&rsquo;s agency is understood as the continuation of, and succession to, his father&rsquo;s office. Consequently, Hayes&rsquo;s evidence does not undermine ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd&rsquo;s precedence over Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān. Rather, the cumulative evidence supports the continuity of ʿUthmān b.
